RSS - Because Nerds are Lazy Bums

Are you a blog addict? The kind of person who would rather check their friends' blogs for the 12th time than start studying for their exam tomorrow. How many hours a day do you waste checking websites to discover, once again, that there is nothing new to read!

Is this you? If so... you're living in the past! Quit living in the past! The IT nerds have the answer. In fact they've had it for years - they just never got round to telling you.

If there is one thing you can rely on IT nerds being, it's lazy. Why play soccer in the sun when you can play online Solitaire? Why go out for lunch when you can eat yesterday's nachos? And why open all these webpages when you can write a script to do it for you?

And so RSS was born - a nerd language that would allow blogs everywhere to communicate with the nerds - telling them the very second a new blog post was made.

Well, I am one of those nerds. I've been using Bloglines for the past couple of years to keep track of all the blogs I read. But recently I moved to Google Reader and I'm loving it.

This is what my Google Reader looks like:

Getting started yourself is easy as:

Go to http://reader.google.com
Login with your Google Account (or create one)
Click add subscription, type "blog.walshy.net" and click Add
Do the same for all the other blogs you read

Now, whenever one of your friends posts to their blog, Google Reader will tell you! Then you can read the post within Google Reader, or click on the funny arrows to read the post on the blogger's own site.

It's like a microwave - once you get it, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.
